Shiv Dayal Batish, popularly known as S.D. Batish, was an illustrious Indian singer and music director born on December 14, 1914, in Patiala, India, and he passed away on July 29, 2006, in Santa Cruz, California. He started his musical career in 1936, becoming well-known for his work in Bollywood films. Batish’s remarkable contributions include scoring and singing for the film “Dassi” in 1944 and composing music for several other films such as “Betab,” “Bahu Beti,” and “Karwat.” His collaboration with the Beatles during their “Help” movie and his subsequent move to the USA in 1970 to teach at the University of California further highlight his versatile musical journey. Among his notable works, the songs “Khaamosh Nigaahen Yeh Sunaati Hai,” and “Meri Aarzu Dekh Kya Chahta Hu,” from the movie “Dassi” stand out. He also wrote and performed the theme song “Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan” for the BBC television show “Apna Hi Ghar Samajhiye.” Batish’s impact on Indian music is also remembered through his contributions to educational materials on Indian classical music, such as “Ragopedia.”
