Singer S. Janaki (Sishta Sreeramamurthy Janaki)
S. Janaki, affectionately known as Janaki Amma and celebrated as the “Nightingale of South India,” was born on April 23, 1938, in Pallapatla, Repalle, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh. She is one of the most prominent playback singers in India, having sung over 48,000 songs across various Indian languages, with a career spanning over six decades. Notable among her myriad of songs are hits like “Gori Kaa Saajan” from the Aakhree Raasta (1986), “Tune Mera Doodh Piya Hain” from Aakhree Raasta (1981), and “Sun Rubia Tumse Pyar Ho Gaya” from Mard (1985). Janaki’s remarkable contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including four National Film Awards and various state film awards. She won National Awards for her performances in songs from the films 16 Vayathinile (1976, Tamil), Oppol (1980, Malayalam), Sithara (1984, Telugu), and Thevar Magan (1992, Tamil). She received the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer four times, for songs such as “Senthoora Poove” from “16 Vayathinile” and “Poo Maalai Pozhudhil” from “Pagalil Oru Iravu,” both of which became evergreen hits. Additionally, she has been honored with the prestigious Kalaimamani award by the Government of Tamil Nadu for her exceptional contribution to Tamil cinema.
