Penaz Masani, born in Navsari, Gujarat, has been a prominent figure in the Indian ghazal scene since she debuted with her first album in 1981. Her journey into music was profoundly influenced by her father, Doli Masani, a classical singer in the court of Sayajirao Gaekwad of Baroda. Over her illustrious career, Penaz has released over twenty albums and has sung in more than fifty Hindi films, her melodious voice enchanting audiences both domestically and internationally. Notable among her vast repertoire are hits like “Tu agar mujhse” from the album “Dil Mein Aankhon Mein” (1994), and her renditions of classics like “Meri zindagi hai zaalim” and “Tanha tanha“. Penaz’s contributions to music have been recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious Padma Shree in 2009, the title of “Shehzadi Tarunnam” from the Uttar Pradesh government in 1996, and the 11th “Kalakar Award” for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 2002. Beyond the stages and recording studios, Penaz has also made significant contributions to cultural exchanges, performing under the aegis of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in countries such as Germany, South Africa, and Vietnam, spreading the charm of ghazal across the globe.
